The Infant Curriculum at Ysgol Gellifor
Morning Sessions -
Phonics - All year groups follow Read, Write, Inc.
Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics complete literacy programme which helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling.
Handwriting
Children have one timetabled session per week which focusses on handwriting.
Literacy - Year 1 & Year 2 follow Literacy Shed
Literacy Shed provides high quality films, animations and non-fiction texts that can be used in the primary classroom to enhance the teaching of reading and writing.
Maths - Nursery & Reception follow Master the Curriculum and Year 1 & Year 2 follow Primary Stars Education.
Both schemes provide practical learning opportunities as well as written-based activities to ensure diversity in the classroom.
Health & Wellbeing - All year groups follow Jigsaw.
Jigsaw PSHE perfectly connects the pieces of Personal, Social, Health and Well-Being Education.
The programme teaches children and young people emotional literacy, social- and lifelong skills, RSE/RSHE and resilience in an age-appropriate manner.
Afternoon Sessions -
Humanities: R.E - All year groups follow Discovery R.E
Children’s critical thinking skills can be developed, their motivation to learn increased, and their knowledge and understanding of, and empathy with people and their beliefs, religious or otherwise, will be enhanced. This approach takes very seriously the philosophy that children are free to make their own choices and decisions concerning religion and belief.
Expressive Arts, Humanities, Science & Technology
These aspects of the curriculum are taught through the children's topic work. Children have a voice in deciding what they would like to learn about and the teacher's use the children's ideas to guide their learning journey each half term.
Health & Wellbeing: P.E
Children will be given opportunities to focus on a different aspect of physical activity each half term. Eg, Swimming, Gymnastics, Dance, Athletics etc
Outdoor Classroom
We ensure that we take up any opportunity for the children to learn outdoors across the curriculum. However, every Monday afternoon we have a timetabled slot to use our outdoor classroom & forestry area.
Cymraeg - Fflic a Fflac
The Welsh language is embedded into our curriculum across all our subjects. Children will follow Fflic a Fflac to consolidate and learn new language patterns.
